Introducing… Nilima Begum, business development

Nilima - new business development executive

Meet Nilima Begum, one of our brilliant business development team members at Evolve Business Finance. In this Q&A, she shares her career journey, the influences that shaped her path, and what motivates her to give her best every day. Get to know the person behind the role and what drives her success!

How long have you been at Evolve Business Finance?

Coming up to five months now! It’s flown by.

What do you do?

I work in business development. My role involves finding new clients, building trust, and keeping strong relationships with our existing clients. I help make sure they have a smooth onboarding process and support them with tailored funding solutions. I also work closely with our lending partners and introducers to maintain solid relationships–and sometimes make lifelong friends along the way.

What attracted you to Evolve Business Finance?

The main draw was the chance to work with Stef. We’d known each other for a few years and worked together in a different capacity, so when the opportunity came up, it was a no-brainer. He’s brilliant at what he does, and I knew I’d learn loads from him. He’s incredibly patient, especially when I’m firing off 10,000 questions a day! We’re also quite alike, so I knew we’d be a great team. He’s pushed me out of my comfort zone, and I’ve grown because of it. I couldn’t ask for more.

What was your first job?

I started young, waitressing at my family’s restaurant when I was 15 or 16. It gave me a great foundation.

What motivates you to get out of bed and come to work every day? ¶Easy – I love my job, and I have the best boss! Every day is different, and I’m always learning. I get to think outside the box, and I speak with all sorts of businesses. I also work alongside some of the best in the industry. I’m really lucky, and most days, it doesn’t even feel like work!

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Do it my way, and most importantly, be myself.

Who has been a major influence in your career and why?

Steph Odunston gave me my first big break, taking a chance on a naïve 20-something. She’s always believed in me, and I hope I’ve lived up to that! She’s the reason I moved into commercial finance and found my passion. More recently, Stef has been a huge support in my decision to move over to the “dark side,” and I’ve never regretted it.

Do you have any pets as in-house colleagues?

Yes, my tuxedo shorthair cat, Mimi.

What is one work skill that you think everyone should have?

Always strive to better yourself, both professionally and personally.

What’s something on your desk, a nearby wall, or out the window that cheers you up during the day?

Two things on my desk! One is an old Aldermore lion, a gift from a former teammate, which always makes me smile. The other is a Fortnum & Mason hamper card with a lovely message from one of my favourite people, Glenn. Both mean a lot to me and remind me of what I can do.

How do you like to unwind after a busy workday?

If I haven’t worked out in the morning, I head to the gym for a strength workout or a run. Good music, and I’m set.

What’s your favourite book, movie, or series and why?

My favourite book has to be Stormbreaker by Anthony Horowitz. It’s what got me hooked on the Alex Rider series as a kid. My favourite movie is Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. I remember watching it for the first time at school, which led me to read the books. For TV, it’s White Collar–I love the idea of the FBI working with a criminal to solve art crimes.
